Diffuse cartilage damage or early osteoarthritis are currently treated non-operatively, based on the latest scientific evidence. Several solutions can be applied here, all of which Dr. Klasan will discuss with you.

More options are available for isolated cartilage defects, for instance, after trauma. One option is the so-called microfracturing, which causes a healing response from the bone marrow.

Cartilage transplant is also a possibility, using your own cartilage (autologous cartilage transplantation). The modern techniques allow a single-stage procedure. For larger defects, a two-stage procedure is needed.
